Less Toxic Cleaning Products

Our company wants to improve the life of you and of the ones you love. By using a cleaning service you can ensure the cleanliness of your home without the hassle of weekly chores that eventually get neglected. Call us today to set up a meeting with our team to discuss your needs. In the mean time try these alternative cleaning products to keep your family safe.

All-Purpose Cleaner
Cleaners may contain ammonia, a strong irritant which can also cause kidney and liver damage, butyl cellusolve which is neurotoxic and rapidly penetrates skin, and ortho phenylphenol which is a severe eye and skin irritant. Many all-purpose cleaners contain DEA and TEA which can react with nitrites (added as undisclosed preservatives or present as contaminants) to form carcinogenic nitrosomines which readily penetrate the skin.  Many coloured products are made with carcinogenic coal tar colours.  Hormone disrupting parabens may be used as preservatives. Many cleaners also include fragrances and detergents. Alternative brands may contain d-limonene, a sensitizer which can also cause respiratory distress as well as liver, kidney and nervous system damage. D-limonene is a hazardous substance, although it is derived from a natural source.  We do not recommend it for frequent use.
  Less-toxic Alternatives
  • Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
  • Down East - All-Purpose Cleaner
  • ECOgent - General Purpose Cleaner and Stain Removal
  • 20 Mule Team Borax (caution: do not inhale powder)
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Nature Clean - All Purpose Cleaning Lotion
  • Nature Clean - Cream Cleanser
  • Nature Clean - Natural Kitchen and Bath Spray Cleaner
  • Soap Factory  AA5 Concentrate - multi-purpose cleaner
Bleach
The main ingredient in chlorine bleach is sodium hypochlorite (chlorine added to lye.) Chlorine is toxic as a skin irritant, and by inhalation.  Sodium hypochlorite can create poisonous chlorine gas if mixed with ammonia (which may be an unlabeled ingredient in some cleaning products) or with vinegar. Workplace safety data sheets warn that sodium hypochlorite may be a neurotoxin and cause liver damage. People with chemical sensitivies report adverse reactions to minute quantities of chlorine.  Sodium hypochlorite readily combines with organic matter to form organochlorines which are highly toxic to aquatic life.
 Less-toxic Alternatives
  • Envirodesic - Hydrox
  • Hydrogen peroxide - drug store dilution.  Use 1/2 cup per wash load.
  • Nature Clean - Natural Laundry Bleach (powder)
  • Nature Clean - Natural Liquid Bleach
  • Oxiclean - oxygen bleach
  • President's Choice - Active Oxygen Bleach
  • Soapworks - Safe Bleach
  • Simply Clean - Oxygen bleach
Dishwashing Liquid (Hand)
Most dishwashing liquids contain detergents, coal tar based colours, and artificial fragrance. They may contain Quarternium 15, an eye and skin irritant which can release carcinogenic formaldehyde. If the label says "Do not use with chlorine bleach", then the product probably contains ammonia. Many dyes are known to be carcinogenic; they can penetrate the skin and be deposited on dishes. Conventional detergents are petroleum-based.
 Less-toxic Alternatives
  • Bioasis Dishwasher Detergent
  • Down East - Dishwashing Liquid
  • Nature Clean - Natural Dishwashing Detergent
  • Seventh Generation - Natural Dish Liquid

Easy Cleaning Tricks

Clean Mini Blinds With Vinegar

There is a relatively new trick that involves the dishwasher for cleaning blinds but this little trick is much faster and you don’t have to take the blinds down first. You just mix together equal parts of water and vinegar in a bowl and then don an old sock (slip it on your hand not your feet). Just dip the sock in the vinegar and water mixture and then run it over your blinds. You can also use a second old sock to wipe away the dampness after you have cleaned each slat in the blind.
Clean Mini Blinds With Vinegar

Clean A Microwave With Vinegar And Steam

Now’s the time to clean up that microwave and make it look new again. Unfortunately, for some this means removing food splatters from top to bottom and some of these food splatters can be really difficult to get off. Instead of wearing yourself out by scrubbing, simply fill a bowl (one that is microwave safe) with 1 to 2 cups of water, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Place the bowl in the microwave and run for 5 minutes. If you have a really messy microwave, leave it sitting in there for a few extra minutes after the timer goes off. Then just wipe clean with a damp towel.

We've all done it, watched the plate, mug or drinking glass slip from our fingers and fall to the floor. If you don't have carpet or aren't standing on a big cushy plush rug, the next sound you hear may be shattering as the item hits the floor.
Hooray! Now we can talk about the best way to pick up glass!

Little Things | Portland

It's the Little Things | Portland

So, your home is clean, uncluttered. It might even be *gasp* properly organized. Now, how to keep it that way?

After you've spent the time to get your home (and maybe even your life) tidied up, do you have a strategy stay on top of things?

Here's a few tips to keep your grasp on the situation.

You have two hands, use one to put something away as you walk from one room to the next.

If you spot clutter trying to take hold, stop it in its tracks. Clutter attracts clutter, so it should be dealt with as soon as you notice it. Put it away, wash it, just don't let it start a party on your counter, table or desktop- it will get out of hand quickly otherwise.

Stop. Sit down. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths. Open your eyes and take a look around. You will probably spot at least one thing out of place. Deal with it, then enjoy your day- and your fresh, clean space!

Gross!

Nastiest Things that Don't Get Cleaned Often

There are some items in your home that just don't get the attention they need when it's time to clean.
Inside dishwasher- Who knew, right? The folks at Today do. This machine is all about getting things clean. Over time, the gunk that was on your plates can coat the inside of your dishwasher. It won't be as effective at getting your dishes clean and may even start to smell funky!
Use about a cup of baking soda, sprinkled on the bottom of the dishwasher overnight. In the morning, run the machine on the highest temperature setting with a cup of vinegar for a cycle. It should be back to getting your dishes sparkling clean more efficiently than before.

Pillows- So gross! Did you know that a pillow is growing? Due to the accumulation of dead skin, dust mites and the waste they produce, your pillow may double its weight over two years.
If you have synthetic pillows, you're in luck. You can throw them in the washing machine on a heavy cycle with gentle detergent. Tumble dry on low with a couple tennis balls. You want to get them completely dry to avoid mold!

Melissa Maker, over at Clean My Space  brought up the Toilet Bowl Brush- For being a "no-brainer" on the yuck factor, this object is routinely neglected after it does some of the dirtiest work in your home.
Place it between the seat and the rim of the bowl, spray with disinfectant till dripping wet and allow to sit for ten minutes. Rinse with really hot water and put it back between the seat and bowl to dry again.

Among the items Fitness Magazine talked about gym bags, among other things that can get really nasty. If you carry damp clothes- make sure they're in a plastic bag in your gym bag, the same goes for your shoes!

Well, this is just a short list, feel free to add more icky items in the comments!

Saving Time

Daylight savings has happened. Do you not feel like you have more time yet?

Where does Soap Come From?

Sudsy Starts | Portland

Did you know people have been using soap for up to 5000 years?
It's true, according to ancient cuneiform tablets, Sumerian people were using a combination of ash and fat to clean up tough messes. Ancient Egyptians recorded recipes for soap on papyrus scrolls in 1500 B.C.
Soap use declined after the fall of the Roman Empire- as a matter of fact, it's believed that the decline in hygiene was in part responsible for the rise of the bubonic plague, aka the Black Death. Many people blame the Catholic Church for discouraging daily bathing (apparently too "pagan,") but the truth is- early soaps didn't smell very good. It's true, boiled animal fat and ash don't always smell awesome.
Today, our soaps smell great, or like nothing at all if that's what you want. You can choose if you want a lot of suds, or hardly any. We have come a long way from beating our clothes against rocks near a river to get them clean.

Planning Your Spring Cleaning

Planning Your Spring Cleaning |

Are you feeling the spring cleaning itch?
It's almost time... the days are getting longer and warmer, it's still light out when you leave work again... and your home is a wreck.

It might seem tempting to throw your hands up in despair, but you can do this- we're here to help.
To really tackle your spring cleaning right, you want to invest a little time into planning.
First, assess. How much cleaning versus how much discarding do you need to do?
If you focus on getting rid of unwanted items- that's clutter you're eliminating outright. Getting rid of stuff first will reduce your cleaning time later.

Next, figure out where to start. If you need to use a space often- like the kitchen sink, start there. If you need help staying focused, set a timer on your phone. After 20 minutes of cleaning, take five to do something more entertaining. Once your five is up, spend another 20 cleaning. You'll be shocked by your progress.
If you don't have the time or energy, you can give Grit a call and we can get it done for you. Alternately, for a really deep clean, you can call us after you tidy up and we'll come in and sanitize, mop, and otherwise hit all those nooks and crannies for you.

Sunshine as a Disinfectant? Tigard

Can Sunlight Kill Germs?

Did you know that the sun's rays can kill germs? It's true... mostly.
According to a paper published by John Weinziri, sunlight can effectively kill of or inhibit the bacteria that cause tuberculosis.
Now, does that mean you should just leave your dirty laundry in the sun for a while? No.
Your neighbors probably wouldn't appreciate it.
Also, sunlight has to hit all areas of the fabric. Bacteria can still hid in the weave of the cloth or the seams. To top it off, it seems TB is fairly delicate as far as bacteria goes.
So, guess you've still got to do laundry this week...
If only there was someone you could call to do it for you.

Fight Big Oil...Stains | Portland Oregon

Oil Stains Don't Have to Ruin Your Clothes | Portland

We've all been there. Maybe it's salad oil, maybe it's motor oil... if you're this Grit Elite Staffer, it's pesto. We've all gotten some type of oil onto our clothing and we've (probably) all had to resign ourselves to a ruined garment because of it.
It doesn't have to be that way.
If you just dripped, wiped or spattered a grease or oil-based drop on your clothes, you need to act quickly, but you don't need to consign your outfit to your "laundry day" wardrobe just yet.

  • As soon as you notice the stain, blot! Remove as much of the substance as possible.
  • Next, cover it with something absorbent. (Salt is a great choice and very handy if you're at the dinner table.) Other substances that may help are cornstarch, baking soda or talcum powder.
  • Wait... two minutes minimum to give the absorbent substance a chance to soak up as much of the stain as possible.
  • Remove the absorbent powder- make sure not to let the used material get on other parts of your clothes.
  • Now, it's time to scrub. Put dish soap or a little bit of laundry soap onto the stain, then gently scrub (an old clean toothbrush works great for this.) Be sure to get both sides of the stained fabric.
  • Wash the article of clothing on it's own, following the instructions on the tag.
  • Dry- hang it to dry. If the stain persisted, the heat from the drying will cause it to set and all your effort was for nothing.
  • If at first you don't succeed, try again!
While this won't save every piece of clothing, it will dramatically improve your chances of saving your clothes.
